Bro. Lloyd Gilbert Woods Sr.

Bro. Lloyd Gilbert Woods, Sr., 85, of Batesville, died Saturday, December 7, 2019 at White River Medical Center in Batesville. He was born January 1, 1934 in Randles, Missouri to the late Otis and Gustoval (Edgin) Woods. Bro. Woods served not only the Lord, but he also served in the United States Navy. He spent time on ammunition ships and traveled to many ports across the world. At the age of 19 he married Helen Maxine Arnold on December 23, 1953 and together they faithfully began ministering in the Church of God in Arkansas; their ministerial service along with their two children lasted 40 years and 3 months. During those 40 years of ministry his last two pastorates were spent at the Velvet Ridge Church of God for 15 years and lastly the Jonesboro Church of God, now known as “The Rock”, for 8 years. While in Velvet Ridge he joined the Velvet Ridge Volunteer Fire Department. Not only was Bro. Woods a pastor, but he was also a master carpenter: having built many churches, parsonages, and beautiful cabinetry. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and just spending time with his family and countless friends. Bro. Woods had a love for people, not just ministering to them, but wholesome love for fellowship and friendships. He focused on the Lord’s direction for his life and diligently followed where he was called. After “his season” of ministry was over he attended the Cave Creek Church of God. He is survived by his wife, of 65 years, 11 months and 7 days, Maxine; daughter, Kimberly Dawn Lewellen (Chris); grandchildren, Jonathan, Ashley and Kylee Arnold, Colton and Jagger Woods; God-daughter, Shannon Parker; siblings, Johnny and Dale Woods, Della Fortner, Elsie Loos, Lind McMinn and Sue French; daughter-in-law, Rhonda Benton; as well as numerous other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, a son, Lloyd Gilbert Woods, Jr. “Woody”; siblings, Wesley and Robert Woods, Anna Morgan, Martha Morgan and Betty Hill. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 11, 2019 at the Velvet Ridge Church of God with visitation prior to services beginning at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow in the Velvet Ridge Cemetery.
