Thomas Lancil Slough

Thomas L. Slough was born in Searcy, Arkansas, to Geneva Elam and Charles Slough on August 11, 1946, and passed away on September 2, 2024, in North Little Rock, Arkansas. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Dawn; his sons, Scott (Amber) of Searcy and TJ (Nicole) of Conway; and six grandchildren, Shane, Keegan, Nathaniel, Reagan, Garrot and Adah, as well as many relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, John Elam; his maternal grandparents, Alicedean and Otha Fox; his paternal grandparents, Bertha and Charles Slough; and a grandson, Johnathan Cole Slough. Tom was a lifelong resident of Searcy, graduating from Searcy High School in 1964. After high school, he joined the United States Air Force; while stationed in Machias, Maine, he met the love of his life, “My Dawn” McQuarrie, whom he married in 1970. Scott was born in 1973, and TJ was born in 1976. Tom retired after 4 years of active duty in the Air Force and 28 years of service in the Air National Guard. Tom never met a stranger. He was constantly ready with a joke or riddle, and you knew he liked you if he teased you. We will forever miss his offbeat sense of humor, and his ability to make us laugh. One of Tom’s passions was showing Western Pleasure horses for many years; he was a member of the Hillbilly Horse Show Association, and he traveled countless miles with his horses and trailer, always looking forward to seeing his horse show family. He also enjoyed taking group bus tours; long drives in the country with Dawn with the top down on their convertible; anything that his grandchildren were doing; and, although he did not always like to admit it, he loved the countless number of dogs that called his house their home. Tom also appreciated a good Hallmark movie, a guilty pleasure for which he received relentless teasing from the rest of the family! Tom was a member of Westside Church of Christ. He was also an active volunteer with Paws Inn, where he served as treasurer. Tom’s visitation will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, at Powell Funeral Home in Searcy, Arkansas, with a memorial service following at 6:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Westside Church of Christ, Holy Sews, Muscular Dystrophy Association, or a charity of your choice.
