Jayne New

Alice Jayne New, 92 years of age, of Searcy, died May 6, 2009. She was born October 29, 1916 in Winslow, Arkansas, while her mother was visiting friends in their home. Her parents were Otis Kelly and Annabelle Lansdale Kelly. She had one younger sister, June Marie Kelly Lee, who died in March, 2009, in Norman, Oklahoma. Alice Jayne Kelly New was married to Donald L. New for 44 years, before he passed away. They were married in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1936. She is survived by her youngest daughter, Adonna Kaye New Johnson, who is married to Dr. David Mark Johnson of Searcy, Arkansas. They have one daughter, Adonna Daye Johnson Coates who lives in Fayettville, Arkansas, with her husband Wesley Stewart Coates. She is also survived by three other grandchildren by her oldest daughter, Sherilyn Grace New Van Patter, who passed away in 1994. They are, Katherine Kelly Van Patter, of Los Angeles, California; Donald James Van Patter, of Little Rock, Arkansas; Anne Lynnette Van Patter Steuwe, of Knoxville, Tennessee. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Devon and Drew Van Patter of Fayetteville, Arkansas and Grace and Mason Steuwe of Knoxville, Tennessee. Mrs. New was a graduate of Tulsa High School, Tulsa, Oklahoma. She was director of sales for foundations for Pfhifer's Department Store (Dillard's) in Hot Springs, Arkansas from 1954 - 1962. She was co-owner of Doncraft Antiques, in Hot Springs, with her husband, Donald L. New from 1958 - 1988. She moved to Searcy in 1988. She wrote many letters and some articles for the Daily Citizen and she had 12 articles published in USA Today. She has always been a strong supporter of the Democratic Party, and very active in the democratic club of Searcy. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Searcy. She was much involved with the onset of the Humane Society of Searcy, and she fed and housed many homeless cats and dogs. She co-owned Memory Lane Antiques with her daughter, Adonna K. Johnson. She was a colorful individual - she will be missed.
